Dag Westerstahl is a Professor of Theoretical Philosophy and Logic at Stockholm University. His interests include logic, formal semantics, and philosophy of language, with a special emphasis on integrating themes such as on generalized quantifiers, studied both from a logical and a linguistic point of view. He has been the Secretary General of the International Division of Logic and Methodology of Science, and he is a member of the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences in Gothenburg and of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
Dag Westerstahl
The lecture will outline three steps in the process of assigning meanings to logical constants (in the sense that, for example, the standard meaning of the disjunction symbol in classical propositional logic is a certain truth table), after illustrating with examples from several logical languages. Compositionality is a prerequisite, and I argue that without compositionality, the idea of such meanings makes little sense. Reasons for choosing a standard or intended meaning among the many possible ones are discussed, in particular in connection with Carnap’s Categoricity Problem, i.e. the idea that the standard meanings should be fixed by the relevant consequence relation.

The special fascination with qing exhibited in late Ming literature, or the so-called cult of qing, has been attracting increasing attention from students of Chinese literature. However, to describe the precise implications of this late Ming concept of “qing,” a word that does not have an exact English equivalent but has been translated on various occasions as “feelings,” “love,” “romantic sentiments,” and “passions,” has proven to be very difficult. Its popularity in the world of letters during the late Ming (1368-1644) only adds to its ambiguities. This talk will discuss one aspect of the cult of qing (emotion) in late-Ming poetic criticism: its connection with validity. How did literati use the concept of qing in their criticism to discuss how poetry might be authentic, accurate, and real?
Leigh Jenco (BA, Bard College; MA and PhD, University of Chicago) joined LSE in 2012, after teaching at the National University of Singapore. She has held visiting positions at the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica, Taiwan; the Department of History, Taiwan University; and the University of Heidelberg. She was associate editor of the flagship journal American Political Science Review (2016-2020) and principal investigator for the Humanities in the European Research Area grant project "East Asian Uses of the European Past," funded by the European Commission. She is currently Project Lead for the three-year, £1.5 million global convening project Chinese Global Orders funded by the British Academy.
Her first two monographs—Making the Political: Founding and Action in the Political Theory of Zhang Shizhao (Cambridge UP, 2010) and Changing Referents: Learning Across Space and Time in China and the West (Oxford UP, 2015)—pioneered the engagement of normative political theory with the intellectual history of modern China. Her current research explores late Ming neo-Confucian ideas about equality, including how they are manifest in poetic and literary theory. She is beginning a new project on the 20th century rediscovery of early modern Chinese folksong compendia, as a means of exploring alternative genealogies of social science.

Daoism and Sufism are spiritual traditions formed in pre-modern cultures, yet they can be considered treasures and assets for contemporary man. Traditions such as these should not only be viewed in the light of the past and what happened in the past. In order to rethink contemporary issues, traditions can be viewed as the spiritual assets of nations. It is evident from historical experience that nations cannot achieve a balanced and orderly future without taking their past into account. Daoism, Sufism, Buddhism, and Hinduism are the most significant spiritual traditions of the East, which have nurtured the souls of the nations of the East for centuries. Further, these traditions have provided concrete examples of coexistence, mutual understanding, and empathic dialogue that are relevant to the actual lives of people. Considering the need for dialogue, but also polylogue, companionship, and participation in today's society, we may be able to reread these traditions and their models and be inspired by them. Through its great culture, along with its greatness and glory in civilization, China can reread and present the pattern of coexistence of spiritual traditions formed in its history. Traditions such as these provide the purest and deepest understanding of truth, the world and man.

After a brief review of the historical trajectory of AI development and associated philosophical discourse, this talk will raise selective ethical-political questions. Based on a forthcoming co-authored review that will appear in the next issue of “Issues in Science and Technology” (the policy journal of the American National Academics of Science), this talk will make a critical examination on Mustafa Suleyman, a DeepMind founder, and his recent The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and the Twenty-First Century’s Greatest Dilemma (2023), which attempts to do three interlocking things: call out the existential threat of an uncontained artificial intelligence-synthetic biology symbiosis, steel readers against the strong tendency to look away from the dangers, and make concrete policy proposals for achieving containment.
